Victoria distributes more gaming grants

THIRTEEN more community groups on the North Shore have been told they will get a cash injection from the province's community gaming grants.

The ministry of community, sport and cultural development recently announced grants totaling $327,000 for groups in North and West Vancouver. Most of the grants announced cover the fiscal year 2011/2012.

The single biggest grant, of $83,000, will go to the West Vancouver Soccer Club. Other sizable grants include $50,000 for the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, $47,500 for the North Shore Multicultural Society and $40,000 for the R.N.B. Dance and Theatre Arts Society.

A number of other community groups also got a funding boost. Recipients include $23,575 for the Cypress Ski Club, $15,000 for the North Shore Celtic Ensemble, $11,375 for the Mount Seymour Ski Club, $10,600 for the BCO Volleyball Club, $10,000 for the North Shore branch of the Special Olympics British Columbia Society and $10,000 for the De Danaan Irish Cultural Society. The North Shore Chamber Music Society also received $1,200.

The latest recipients are in addition to 14 other local organizations who also received a funding boost of more than $550,000 Aug. 31 and included the North Shore Girls Soccer Club, which received $125,000, the North Vancouver Minor Hockey Association, which was granted $100,000, and the Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club, which got $50,000.

Total provincial government revenues from gambling were about $1.1 billion last year. Of that, the province handed out approximately $135 million to local community groups.
