Speed likely played a role in a horrific late-night crash on the Lions Gate Bridge Wednesday that left two men dead.
The victims, 20 and 21 years old, were heading north in the bridges middle lane just before midnight when they lost control and spun into an oncoming West Vancouver Blue Bus, according to police. Another vehicle also got involved when it apparently tried to avoid the initial collision, but did not suffer serious damage.
Emergency crews extracted the victims from the wreckage. One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was rushed to hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him. Both men were from Richmond.
Three people from the bus were also taken in for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries. The other 12 passengers were reportedly uninjured.
The crossing was closed for the remainder of the night while analysts tried to piece together the events that led to the crash.
The early indication is speed was a factor due to the extensive damage to the vehicle, said Const. Tammy Khorram, a spokeswoman for the WVPD.
No names have been released while investigators attempt to reach the victims families.
