A mountain biker died near West Vancouver's Cypress Bowl Monday after crashing on one of the mountain's trails.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene just before 2 p.m. when someone called to report the accident on Coiler trail about a kilometre from the fourth switchback of Cypress Bowl Road.
The middle-aged victim had apparently been riding the winding path when he was severely injured. Police, fire and ambulance crews hiked into the area on foot, but were unable to save him. The cause of death has not been released.
Mark Wood, program manager of the North Shore Mountain Biking Association, said local enthusiasts have been deeply worried by the tragedy. "In the mountain biking community on the North Shore, it's one degree of separation," he said. "We look at (it) as an extended family."
As of Tuesday afternoon, the victim's name had not been released.
