It appears the collision that closed several lanes of the Upper Levels highway Tuesday afternoon involved a distressed young man who stole a friends car from Capilano University, according to police.

The 19-year-old left the North Vancouver campus just before 2 p.m. after having taken an associates vehicle without consent, said North Vancouver RCMP in a release. The man, who was in significant emotional distress had made his way as far west as Lions Bay when an officer spotted him. The cruiser activated its lights and chased the driver at low speed back into West Vancouver, where a WVPD cruiser was waiting.

It appears the man ploughed into the West Vancouver car before coming to a stop.

The driver and the WVPD officer were both taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators expected the eastbound lanes of the highway to remain closed between the Cypress Bowl and Westmount exits until 5p.m.
