A male driver has had his vehicle impounded after excessively speeding in North Vancouver.

Late Friday evening, the driver was clocked travelling 172 kilometres per hour westbound on Highway 1, near the Capilano Road offramp. The speed limit there is 80 km/h.

To make matters worse, the man – who is in his mid-20s – was driving without a licence, said Const. Mansoor Sahak with North Vancouver RCMP.

He had one when he lived in another province, but it had became void while living in B.C., explained Sahak.

“When you move to B.C., you have six months to get a B.C. driver’s licence if you plan on living here,” he said. “This individual had lived here for over a year and was still using his Saskatchewan diver’s licence.”

For his offences, the driver received a $368 ticket for excessive speeding, a $138 ticket for driving without a licence, and had his vehicle impounded for seven days.

What was the driver’s explanation for his actions? He was testing out his newly bought GMC Sierra, Sahak said.

“When you buy a vehicle, expect to drive at a normal speed,” Sahak said. “There’s no reason to be testing it out on these roadways.”
