Canada hasn't changed its travel advice for Switzerland in the wake of warnings about visiting the European country from the United States.
The U.S. government issued a message on May 24 under Security Alerts and Warnings, cautioning travellers to Switzerland about a demonstration near the U.S. Embassy in Bern and the Bern main train station (Bern Bahnhof).
Although the demonstrations have dispersed, the update recommends visitors "to maintain increased caution if near either location" and "keep a low profile." U.S. travellers are also instructed to follow the directions of local authorities and monitor local media for information about demonstrations.
The U.S. still maintains a Level One travel advisory (exercise normal precautions) for the Western European country, which is the lowest risk level.
Switzerland consistently ranks among the world's safest countries by several publications. The country was recently ranked the world's safest by U.S. News World & Report.
Canada: Switzerland travel advisory
Global Affairs Canada did not update its travel advice for Switzerland following the U.S. warning.
The Canadian government continues to advise travellers to take normal security precautions in Switzerland. However, the advisory notes that demonstrations sometimes occur, "particularly in Bern, Geneva and Zurich," and can turn violent. They may also disrupt traffic and public transportation.
Additionally, the advisory mentions an elevated threat of the risk of terrorism across Europe. Targets may include schools, places of worship, airports and other transportation hubs and networks, and public areas such as tourist places, restaurants, bars, shopping malls, markets, and hotels.
Canada also cautions that petty crime, such as bag and purse-snatching, may also occur, although this travel advice is standard for most countries.
