It was a door-crasher special at Nesters grocery store in Deep Cove Sunday morning, but not in a good way.

Police and firefighters were called out to the store on North Dollarton Highway just before 11 a.m. after the driver of a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan smashed her SUV through sliding glass doors at the store’s entrance and became wedged inside the vehicle.

Firefighters who arrived on the scene managed to help the driver – a North Vancouver woman in her 70s – out of the back door of the SUV as the front driver’s and passenger’s doors were wedged inside the building, said Scott Ferguson, assistant fire chief with District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue.

Fortunately neither the driver nor anyone else in the store was injured in the crash.

The crash happened when the driver accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, said Const. Mansoor Sahak, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP.

The woman was handed a ticket for driving without due care and attention.

Firefighters remained on the scene until a tow truck pulled the vehicle out of the store entrance.
