Richmond RCMP released a clarification on Friday about what was previously thought to be a violent incident between strangers on Aug. 13.
On Wednesday night, RCMP responded to a call of an assault with a weapon at a shopping centre parkade on No. 3 Road between Park and Cook roads. A security guard had heard the commotion and had intervened in the incident, according to police.
When Mounties arrived, they arrested a suspect after the alleged assault involving a weapon.
On Thursday, the RCMP said it didn't appear the victim and suspect knew each other.
However, on Friday, they clarified that, through further investigation and after interviewing the victim, they "have determined the man and woman from the Aug. 13, 2025 incident are known to each other, and it is not a stranger assault as previously reported."
The victim is currently in stable condition in hospital, according to the RCMP.
“We want to commend the security guard for his quick thinking and actions that played a key role in assisting in this investigation and ensuring the suspect was arrested,” said Supt. Julie Drotar, Richmond RCMP Senior Operations Officer.
“We recognize how concerning an incident of this nature can be to the public. We want to reassure our community that our officers are prepared to respond to any call for service 24/7, 365 days a year.”
The suspect is in custody, and police say there is no ongoing risk to the public.
