The annual Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation run is ready to roll on Oct. 15, with all proceeds from the event going to a program to help students in need.

The run kicks off from Ecole Handsworth Secondary at 9:15 a.m. with five-kilometre and 10-km races, as well as a fun run for kids.

All funds raised go to Streetfront, a grade 8-10 alternative school program for vulnerable teens in Vancouver. Since 2007, the SHLF Run has raised a total of $520,000 for at-risk youth.

“SHLF has funded Streetfront for 14 years and over that period we have moved from providing life changing opportunities for 22 students per year to hundreds per year” stated Trevor Stokes, head teacher for the Streetfront program at Britannia Secondary School in Vancouver. “Through SHLF’s support, Streetfront has become the world’s largest high school-based marathon runner group in the world.”

Dr. Strachan Hartley was a star athlete, student and community member who died in July 2007 at the age of 30 following a battle with non-hodgkins lymphoma. His friends and family created the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation to continue his life’s mission to make a difference. Operated 100 per cent by volunteers, SHLF has raised more than $1 million through fundraising events across Canada. For more information or to register for the run, visit shlf.ca.
