SPORTS NUTRITION FOR YOUNG ATHLETES
by Anita Bean. Published by Firefly Books; $24.95
The old adage "You are what you eat" is certainly relevant when applied to sports nutrition. Much has been written on the importance of nutrition for athletic performance but largely that information has been directed towards adults.
Anita Bean, a sport nutritionist, has written several books on this topic and has now focused on the needs of the young athlete. School-age children are relying on their parents to provide the food they are consuming so it's important that parents and coaches educate themselves on best dietary practices.
Bean provides an abundance of information, much of presented as answers to questions she poses. There is a collection of recipes at the end of the book that show how you can create food that will taste great and offer great nutrition.

The book helps readers determine their personal lunch style - whether they are traditionalists or prefer to "grab-and-go." Meighan makes suggestions for the best containers and lunchboxes, and offers menu-planning tips and easy recipes.
Most of all, she recommends readers enjoy themselves - and start slow if they're used to going out for lunch five days a week.
