A snowpack analyst with North Shore Rescue has determined the incoming snowstorm could lead to the first avalanche cycle of the season.

Hikers looking to get out on the North Shore mountains this weekend are being warned the snowpack situation is entering an especially precarious stage.

North Shore Rescue released a statement on Friday (Dec. 10) addressing how an incoming snowstorm will affect the mountains. The snowstorm, coupled with recent warming trends is likely to create the North Shore’s first avalanche cycle of the season.

“We are all hungry for fresh snow but this weekend calls for a little patience and a lot of caution. It is still early season and terrain traps are generally at their worst,” North Shore Rescue wrote in the statement. “Even small avalanches can have big consequences.”

A video released by the North Shore Snowpack YouTube channel described snowpack conditions from Mount Seymour on Friday.
