PACIFIC CINEMATHEQUE

1131 Howe St., 604-688-FILM www.cinematheque.bc.ca.

Spaghetti Unchained! Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, and the Splendours of the Spaghetti Western Anchored by an exclusive run of the re-release of the Quentin Tarantino favourite Django, the reference point for Tarantino's recent hit Django Unchained, the Cinematheque's Spaghetti Western series features several classics from Leone and Corbucci, and a handful of other bad-ass Westerns all'italiana, including gems by Gianfranco Parolini, Giulio Petroni, and Carlo Lizzani. No less than eight of the ten films in the series were scored by Ennio Morricone, the composer whose music is virtually synonymous with the popular subgenre. Until April 19.

Shepard and Dark

USA 2012. Director: Treva Wurmfeld With Sam Shepard, Johnny Dark. Sam Shepard is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Oscar-nominated actor. Johnny Dark is a recluse and odd-jobber who works at a supermarket deli counter in a small town in New Mexico. The two are best friends, and have been for decades. Wurmfeld's warm, deceptively low-key film is also candid about old wounds, lingering resentments, and petty irritants, which threaten to send things sideways. March 8-10.

VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM CENTRE

1181 Seymour St. (at Davie), www.vifc.org Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel Director Lisa Immordina Vreeland, Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt (USA, 2011, 86 mins, DCP) Both a tribute to one of the twentieth century's most extravagant and influential personalities, and simultaneously a chronicle of the impact of fashion in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, this portrait of the irrepressible editor of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar is an eye-opener, just like its subject. Screening March 14 at 6: 30 p.m.
