Seymour closes for a day after snowplow mishap

IT was a quiet Sunday for what should have been a busy day of fresh powder on Mt. Seymour.

IT was a quiet Sunday for what should have been a busy day of fresh powder on Mt. Seymour.

Resort staff had to keep the hill closed Sunday to allow for BC Hydro crews to make repairs to electrical infrastructure damaged by a snowplow on Saturday night.

"It looks to us that the gear was damaged by a snowplow. . . . Our crews were able to make temporary repairs on Saturday night but had to come back on Sunday to make full repairs," said Simi Heer, BC Hydro spokeswoman.

Thankfully, there were few disappointed skiers and snowboarders turning up to Seymour on Sunday as staff got the word out that the runs were closed for business.

"We gave a lot of communication on Saturday. From feedback (Monday), there wasn't a lot of people showing up," said Julie Mulligan, marketing co-ordinator for Mt. Seymour. "I think we did a really good job relaying the message early when we got the information from BC Hydro."9

Sunday's loss was a gain for Monday's skiers, as a record dump of snow hit the mountain between Sunday and Monday morning. "Within 24 hours, we had about 55 centimetres of snow, which is a huge amount of snow. That brought our snowfall this season to be record numbers over the last five years. All of a sudden, we've already received over 1,000 cm of snow," Mulligan said.
