Anyone with a tree-sized vacancy in their living room and a merit badge in procrastination is in luck this season.
Capilano Cubs and West Vancouver Scouts still have about 300 Christmas trees they’re hoping to sell before Christmas Eve, said Stephen Given, chairman of the West Vancouver Scouts Christmas tree committee.
After selling out of trees the week before Christmas for the last couple years, the Cubs and Scouts decided to order an extra 200 Christmas trees this year, bringing their total to 2,000.
“We’d love to keep them for next year but they don’t look so good by spring,” he said, noting that any unsold tree has a date with the chipper.
The Christmas tree sale is “the major fundraiser” for five groups representing about 400 youth, according to Given.
For the 3rd West Vancouver Scouts the festive December lumberyard usually accounts for 50 per cent of the year’s funding.
Prices range from $20 for a small Douglas fir to $500 for, “14-foot noble monstrosities that take three men and a boy to carry.” The majority of trees are priced between $75 and $80.
The lot, which has operated at the corner of Clyde Avenue and Taylor Way since the 1960s, is scheduled to be open from noon to 8 p.m. until Friday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. The Scouts may also be open a few hours on Christmas Eve but will likely shut down by noon, said Given. North Vancouver Scouts are also selling Christmas trees at Parkgate Village Shopping Centre.
Given is hopeful that anyone with ornaments in need of a branch will swing by.
“For those last-minute people out there, we’ve got some wonderful trees.”
