Schools warned about strip club recruitment

ADVANCED Education Minister Naomi Yamamoto is asking colleges and universities in the province to protect their students from recruitment by the adult entertainment industry.

Yamamoto, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale, wrote to presidents of B.C. post-secondary institutions to inform them that strip clubs in Windsor, Ontario, have been showing up at student job fairs and in some cases offering to pay tuitions.

"I think it's unacceptable for these type of recruiters to set up at our job fairs at our publicly funded institutions," Yamamoto said.

"When someone makes an offer to you to pay for your tuition, that's pretty aggressive, it's very seductive and we don't want to have that seduction take place on our campuses," she said.

David De Muynck, spokesman for Capilano University, said the school is taking the minister's letter very seriously but added that Capilano currently does not hold large career fairs.

"We received the minister's letter and one of the first precautions that we've taken is to notify our security team so they will be vigilant to be watching for any activity like that," said De Muynck.

An adult entertainment lobby group suggested in spring that it would recruit on or near Vancouver public schools - an idea that was rejected by the school board and the provincial government.
