AN eco-conscious North Vancouver school has earned top honours in a recycling contest by collecting nearly 60,000 beverage containers.

Upper Lynn elementary students participated in Encorp's B.C. School Recycling Program in the 2011-2012 school year and gathered 57,723 containers, earning themselves $4,351 plus $1,000 in prize money.

The contest provides schools with the tools and resources to make recycling easy, convenient and profitable, according to a media release. Schools, which compete in different categories based on their size, keep 100 per cent of the deposit refunds.

"North Shore students, teachers and parents are putting in a great effort diverting beverage containers from landfills," said Sandy Sigmund, vice-president development and CMO, Encorp Pacific Canada.

Collingwood School came in second place in its category, collecting 90,793 containers and earning $6,257 in returns and prize money.

Windsor secondary also earned a second place prize and a total of $3,752.

Boundary elementary received an honourable mention for collecting more than 20,000 containers and earning $1,348.
