The North Vancouver School District has named a new superintendent.

The school district made the announcement this week after a nation-wide search to find a replacement for retiring Superintendent John Lewis.

In the end, they didn’t need to look much farther than down the hallway.

This week the school district named assistant superintendent Mark Pearmain as Lewis’s replacement, effective July 1.

Pearmain grew up on the North Shore and has more than two decades of experience in the public school system.

He joined school district No. 44 in 2014 as assistant superintendent after several years with the Vancouver School District as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.

As assistant superintendent Pearmain supervised the distributed learning program, as well as developing the International Baccalaureate program and leading various technology initiatives.

He was also responsible for overseeing the Carson, Handsworth and Sutherland family of schools.

In a press release, Christie Sacré, chairwoman of the North Vancouver Board of Education, stated, “We are confident he will support goals that inspire success for every student and will encourage our community to learn, share and grow together.”

Both of Pearmain’s children attend North Vancouver schools.

Lewis retires on June 30. He has worked for district for more than 37 years, serving as superintendent for the last decade.
