North Shore residents can celebrate responsibly this New Year’s Eve, as transit will be free until 5 a.m.

TransLink is offering free service starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 up until 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 1. Bus service will run on usual weekday schedules with some routes running additional evening and late-night trips after their regular itinerary. The SeaBus will run an extra hour than normal, with the last sailing departing from Lonsdale Quay at 2 a.m. and Waterfront Station at 2:20 a.m.

Operation Red Nose is another option offering a free, designated-driver service that will deliver New Year’s Eve revellers home safely in their own vehicles until 3 a.m.

ICBC is urging drivers to plan for a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve, stating an average of two people are killed and 200 are injured in more than 600 B.C. crashes every year during the holiday.
