RCMP seek driver in North Van hit-and-run on police cruiser

Suspect RCMP vehicle on Highway 1 and fled

The RCMP’s BC Highway Patrol is looking for a hit-and-run driver who sideswiped one of their cruisers in North Vancouver and sped off.

The incident happened around 9:20 p.m. on Aug. 30, near the Highway 1 eastbound off-ramp for Mountain Highway.

The officer had stopped another driver when someone driving a 2016 or newer white Honda HRV swiped them and continued on in the direction of the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing.

No one was hurt in the incident but both vehicles were damaged. The suspect vehicle lost its passenger-side mirror in the collision, which police recovered at the scene. The driver did tap their brakes, following the sideswipe, suggesting they knew they hit something, said Cpl. Mike Halskov, BC Highway Patrol spokesman.

“Any time we pull somebody over on the side of the highway, there's risk involved - risk to the police officers and risk to the person that we're pulling over,” he said. “We really want motorists to take caution when they see emergency vehicles on the side of the road, to make sure they slow down over and give us a room to do our job.”

Anyone with information regarding this hit and run, including any dashboard camera video, is asked to please contact Fraser Coast IRSU at 604-539-2729 and cite file 2021-1293. If you wish to remain anonymous, please call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

“Leaving the scene is subject to a $360 ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act plus three points, and depending on the circumstances, it can even rise to the Criminal Code level for more egregious types of incidents,” Halskov said.
