Metro Vancouver has issued a traffic advisory for upcoming southbound closures and traffic changes in the District of North Vancouver.
Drivers are being told to be prepared for closures along Lower Capilano Road between Marine Drive and Welch Street from Nov. 2 until Dec.13 to allow for water main construction as part of the First Narrows Improvement Project.
Squamish Nation also released a statement to update the community of Xwemelch’stn (Capilano 5 Reserve), about the changes.
“Metro Vancouver will be replacing and upgrading two aging valves that help control water flow through the First Narrows Tunnel Crossing, a water supply tunnel located deep under Burrard Inlet that delivers water from the Capilano Watershed to the City of Vancouver and to the southwestern parts of the region,” Squamish Nation stated.
“These valves are housed within two valve chambers located along the Capilano corridor, south of Marine Drive and within Metro Vancouver’s works yard south of Welch Street.”
Detour routes will be set up and drivers are asked to follow the direction of traffic control personnel and signage on site.
Work will take place Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The traffic changes will include:
- Lower Capilano Road will be temporarily closed to southbound traffic from Marine Drive to Welch Street.
- Lower Capilano Road will be open to local traffic only northbound between the construction area and Marine Drive.
- Two-way traffic along Lower Capilano Road south of the construction area will be maintained for local traffic only.
- Two-way traffic along Mathias Road to and from Marine Drive will be maintained for local traffic only.
