B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office is looking into a serious crash on Highway 1 Sunday.

One woman is in hospital and the province’s Independent Investigations Office has opened a probe following a collision near a police speed trap on Highway 1 in West Vancouver on Sunday.

According to the IIO, which investigates all cases of death or serious harm involving police, the RCMP’s BC Highway Patrol unit was conducting speed checks around Cypress Bowl Road just after noon when a collision occurred between the driver of a Ford F150 and a Harley Davidson.

The woman on the motorcycle sustained serious injuries in the crash and was rushed to hospital.

The IIO will be reviewing the case to determine if “police actions or inactions” may have played a role in collision, said Ronald MacDonald, chief civilian director of the IIO.

“We'll look at all different factors about what occurred here and make a decision as to whether or not the actions of the police were appropriate,” he said.

If they believe a crime may have been committed, they may forward a request to the Crown to prosecute charges.

The West Vancouver Police Department has taken over the investigation of the crash itself, but because the IIO has asserted jurisdiction over the incident, no further details about the collision will be released, according to WVPD.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dashcam footage from the area is being asked to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.

The crash tied up traffic for several hours Sunday, with Highway 1 backing up north of Horseshoe Bay.
