North Vancouver RCMP are looking for the person who left a large sum of cash tucked into a North Vancouver City Library book.

A “very honest” North Vancouver resident borrowed the book and returned it on July 24 with the money left inside, according to Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.

“It’s a bit of a mystery as to how and when the money got into the book and who would be out that much,” De Jong said.

Library records show only the two most recent borrowers of the book, neither of whom claimed the cash.

Police say the rightful owner can have his or her cash back, but must provide the name of the book and value of money left behind. As such, they’re not releasing details about either.

“The amount certainly exceeds any late fees that someone may feel guilty about,” De Jong said. “Let’s just say it’s a lot of money.”

It’s possible the money may have been left by a previous borrower and then gone unnoticed for some time, De Jong said, or it’s possible the money may have been tucked into the book as a payment for someone else waiting for instructions on where to pick it up.

In either case, police are commending the person for turning the money over to police to make an honest effort to find its owner.
