THE FOLLOWING is a selection of volunteer opportunities from various community organizations, made available through Volunteer North Shore, a service of North Shore Community Resources Society.
Big Sister Study Buddy/ Tutor: The Big Sisters Study Buddy Program offers Little Sisters the educational support they need by matching them in a one-to-one relationship with a volunteer tutor. Study Buddies meet for one hour a week for a minimum of six months and work together to help the Little Sister improve her educational performance, which will contribute to her overall sense of self-esteem.
Teen Centre Leader: Volunteer will commit to work with youth at Ambleside Youth Centre. Volunteer is needed to help supervise at a youth drop-in centre, periodically assisting on field trips and special events, working with experienced staff members and following agency policy and procedures.
Meal Server: A seniors' dinner program is looking for meal servers who will serve ready cooked meals and assist the hostess with the cleanup of the kitchen. The dinner programs take place at several different locations on the North Shore, Monday to Thursday at 5 p.m. Driving areas include: Mount Seymour Parkway; Lower Lonsdale to Marine Drive in Norgate area.
Dinner Helper: A volunteer is needed to help with the Tuesday afternoon or evening dinner shift to set up tables, check people in, serve meals, clean up, and assist with coffee. Training and orientation is provided at the Lonsdale United Church. Volunteering a couple of hours each week is a great way to give back to your local community. Minimum age is 13.
Mock Interviewer: North Shore Multicultural Society is looking for a volunteer to provide a safe and positive learning opportunity for First Step clients to practice their interview skills. Responsibilities of this position are to review résumés, cover letters and job ads for each of the participants who are to be interviewed.
