On Our Radar: Karaoke, improv and 'bubble ball' on Coquitlam Youth Week's agenda — and all events are free

What's your teen's favourite activity? They may be able to belt out their favourite song, create a new clay pot and drain three-pointers, all while meeting new people too.

Reconnecting youth with the community, strengthening social skills and having fun.

These are some of the encouragements behind National Youth Week in Canada, which takes place each year at the start of May to celebrate their contributions to society.

The COVID-19 pandemic likely took a toll on young people as many dealt with isolation and uncertainty.

So, in an effort to bring them back together, Coquitlam has tapped a week full of free interactive events in an effort to engage youth with others their age in the community, all while trying new things.

Between May 1 and 7, Coquitlam's community recreation department has listed 18 events that range from health and well being to sports and arts for those aged 11 to 18 years old.

Seminars are also on the agenda to enlighten youth in other areas of life, including financial literacy.

A week-long scavenger hunt kicks off the celebration on May 1, in which youth will be encouraged to solve and find daily clues, take selfies at locations spread across the city and submit them for potential prizes.

Interested participants are encouraged to pre-register for the free activities set to take places at various facilities, like the Pinetree and Poirier community centres, the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex and the City Centre Aquatic Complex.
