North Vancouver RCMP investigating ‘suspicious’ car fire

No one was in the car when the vehicle was up in flames

North Vancouver RCMP say an investigation is underway after a car was found engulfed in flames in the early morning hours last week.

Local Mounties and North Vancouver City Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire just after 2 a.m. on Thursday, July 3 on the 400 block of St. Andrews Avenue.

“We think it’s suspicious in nature,” said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, spokesperson for North Vancouver RCMP. “There was nobody inside the vehicle, and there was no other damage other than the vehicle itself.”

Photos show a grey Pontiac Grand Am’s roof covered in high flames.

Fire Chief Greg Schalk said crews doused the fire quickly after they arrived and held the scene for about two hours while awaiting the RCMP.

The investigator from the fire department could not pinpoint the cause of the blaze as the vehicle was so badly damaged, releasing the car back to the RCMP, the fire chief said.

“It was really hard to make a determination on cause and origin,” Schalk said.

Police are investigating the circumstance surrounding the fire.
