A North Vancouver elementary school teacher has been charged with possession of child pornography.

Ross Road Elementary teacher Graham Bowering was charged April 23, following an investigation by Sunshine Coast RCMP.

Police began investigating the 50-year-old Gibsons resident in August, after receiving a notification from “an electronic service provider, which alleged that an account user had child pornography in their possession,” according to an RCMP statement.

According to court documents filed April 23, Bowering is accused of having “child pornography, photographs, video and written material” in his possession at or near Gibsons between May 2014 and February 2021.

RCMP decided to send out an alert about the charge as Bowering was in direct contact with children during his work as a teacher in North Vancouver, according to a police press release.

Financial reporting from the school district shows a Graham Bowering employed in the 2019-20 school year.

The North Vancouver school district issued a statement Monday saying Bowering’s duties have been handed to another educator and Bowering won’t be at the Lynn Valley school “while this matter is being investigated.”

No Lower Mainland children have been identified as potential victims, according to the RCMP release.

Bowering, who has been released on bail, is expected to make his first court appearance at Sechelt Provincial Court on May 19.
