District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services quickly put out a basement fire in the early morning hours in the Highlands neighbourhood on Thursday.
Assistant chief Dave Burgess said the call came in around 3 a.m. from the owner of a home on the 900-block of Forest Hill Drive.
“The smoke alarm activated. He closed the door, phoned 9-1-1 and was directed to leave the building, which he did. Shortly thereafter we arrived,” Burgess said.
Firefighters attacked the blaze from outside and quickly put out the flames.
The home’s structure remains sound, Burgess said, though it did sustain heavy smoke damage.
Fire investigators remained on the scene Thursday, looking to determine how it started.
