North Van townhouse break-ins a reminder to watch out for neighbours

Nosy neighbours can be the best crime fighters, say North Vancouver RCMP

Pay attention to people coming and going from your neighbour's house, police say.

Police in North Vancouver are warning residents to ask questions if they see something that looks out of place in their neighbourhood.

The warning comes after thieves recently made off with valuables from two townhouses in broad daylight. In both cases, the owners were out while nearby neighbours were home.

But neighbours either didn’t see the thieves – or didn’t notice anything unusual.

The recent break-ins happened at two townhouses in the Lynnmour West complex on Old Lillooet Road in North Vancouver between 8:30 and 11 a.m. on Nov. 2.

Electronics including laptops and tablets, jewelry, car keys and personal ID were stolen.

In one case, neighbours saw a black truck parked nearby, said police. Around the time the second break-in was happening, neighbours saw a blue truck parked in front of the building, said Const. Mansoor Sahak, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP.

Police don’t know if either vehicle was related to the break-ins.

The brazen daylight thefts are a reminder that nosy neighbours can be a powerful deterrent to crime, said Sahek. “If you don’t recognize people or they’re acting suspicious, call the owner,” said Sahek. “Do ask questions.”
