Suspect in North Vancouver skateboarder assault comes forward

North Vancouver RCMP say the man wanted in July 18, 2022 assault investigation involving a skateboarder in Lower Lonsdale has turned himself in.

North Vancouver RCMP say they are no longer seeking the man wanted in connection with an assault on a skateboarder in Lower Lonsdale.
The incident happened on July 18, according to police. On Aug. 17, investigators released images of the man they were seeking.

“North Vancouver RCMP wish to thank the public for their assistance in identifying a suspect in an assault.… A number of people came forward with information, including the suspect himself, said Sgt. Peter DeVries, North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson. “We want to thank both the public and the individual involved for doing the right thing by contacting us.”

The file remains under investigation.

North Vancouver RCMP are asking the public to help ID a suspect accused of assaulting a skateboarder in Lower Lonsdale.

The incident happened on West Esplanade on July 18 around 5 p.m., according to police.

The victim reported to police that he’d been riding his skateboard when he was accosted by a man who was upset and accused the skateboarder of nearly crashing into him.

During the exchange, the suspect is alleged to have assaulted the skateboarder.

The victim reported the incident to North Vancouver RCMP and witnesses from the area stayed to give statements to police.

After almost a month of investigation, police do not know the identity of the suspect. On Aug. 16, North Vancouver RCMP took the step of releasing photos of the man in hopes that someone from the public can help move the investigation forward.

The suspect is described as an older man with light skin, shoulder-length grey hair and a long, grey moustache. He stands about six feet tall.

“We also are encouraging the person who was involved in the incident to identify himself, said Cpl. Melissa Jongema, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Obviously, there are two sides to this story.”
