North Vancouver RCMP officers are taking a plunge Friday (March 11), a Polar Plunge, in support of Special Olympics BC.

Beginning at 10 a.m., officers will dip their toes and then plunge their bodies in the frigid waters off Panorama Park Beach in Deep Cove, hoping to raise money for athletes.

The Polar Plunge for SOBC is an annual event, this year running from March 5 to 20. In a statement, the SOBC said the COVID-19 pandemic has deepened the isolation felt by “far too many” people with intellectual disabilities.

“Participating in the Plunge for Special Olympics BC is a fun and accessible way for all of us to connect and show we care about people with intellectual disabilities and creating inclusion.”

Mounties are inviting everyone to watch officers embrace the cold, and are reminding folks that anyone can take the plunge alongside them.

Registration and fundraising details can be found here at the SOBC website.

“Special Olympics BC volunteers, athletes, and supporters around the province are currently working hard to reopen their in-person programs, with strong SOBC safety protocols in place. But we’re only a quarter of the way back to our usual capacity to change lives," SOBC said.

“The pandemic has had a long-lasting, far-reaching impact on athletes with intellectual disabilities, who were already far too familiar with the pain of isolation, and on Special Olympics BC. More than ever, we need your support to rebuild all of our year-round, in-person sport programs that create empowering connections, open hearts and minds to inclusion, and break down barriers.”
