North Vancouver City Fire Department members halted a structure fire from spreading on the 200 block of West Third Street Monday evening.

The 911 calls first came in just after 5 p.m. on Monday.

When crews arrived, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the windows, threatening an apartment building on the west side, said assistant fire chief Jason De Roy.

“Crews did a great job quickly extinguishing it and containing it to just that one structure,” he said.

The building is an old single-family home owned by the City of North Vancouver and leased out to an accounting firm. No one was inside at the time.

After their investigation on Tuesday, De Roy said it appears the fire started in a garbage can near the front of the building, although the exact cause will go down as undetermined.

The buildings has since been boarded up and fenced off. Apart from the fire, the building sustained smoke and water damage and it’s too soon to say what will happen with the structure, De Roy said.
