A new exhibition now showing at North Vancouver’s CityScape Community ArtSpace is looking to explore the realities of inhabiting a woman’s body.
Through the use of fashion, photography, weavings, and textiles, the exhibition by five women celebrates the achievements of women in science, plays with notions of bodies in space, and takes a look at how the world of fashion can form invisible barriers stopping women from becoming equals in society.
Artists Ilze Bebris, Catherine M. Stewart, Kiku Hawkes, Ruth Scheuing and Marcia Pitch have come together to create the show, titled I wanted to go on a Space Walk but I had nothing to wear.
To coincide with the exhibition, Bebris, Pitch and Hawkes are holding a free workshop on Saturday (March 12) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., where they will share their treasure trove of materials and give participants a wealth of materials to make their own space travel suit.
I wanted to go on a Space Walk but I had nothing to wear runs until April 14, with an official in-person exhibition opening on March 31.
CityScape is at 335 Lonsdale Ave. The contemporary art space is owned by the City of North Vancouver, and programmed and managed by North Van Arts.
More details about the exhibition and tickets can be found at the North Vancouver Community Arts Council website.
