A longtime member of North Shore Rescue is being honoured for his years of emergency volunteer work.

Ron Royston has been selected to receive Emergency Management BC's Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award, according to North Shore Rescue.

Royston began his volunteer service in 1967 as a member of the Alpine Club of Canada and volunteered with the Mountain Rescue Group.

He was a member of the First Aid Ski Patrol in Whistler from 1968 to 1980, then transferred to the Grouse Mountain First Aid Ski Patrol.

Royston joined North Shore Rescue in 1975 and has racked up more than 20,000 volunteer hours with the team as an active member and search and rescue manager.

A chartered accountant by profession, Royston was elected as the team's treasurer in 1984 and still holds the position.

For his volunteer contributions, he has been awarded life membership with both North Shore Rescue and First Aid Ski Patrol.

The Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer Awards will be handed out in a ceremony in Victoria in May.

Each year volunteers are recognized in six categories: Search and Rescue, Emergency Social Services, PEP Air, Road Rescue, Emergency Communications and Lifetime Achievement.
