The North Shore News and its staff are up for a whopping 14 trophies at the BC & Yukon Community News Media Association’s 2020 Ma Murray awards.

For the fourth straight year, the North Shore News is in the running for the General Excellence category for our circulation class.

In the Environmental Initiative category, reporters Brent Richter and Jane Seyd will be going head-to-head. Seyd’s “A Second Chance at Tertiary” examined a citizen- and scientist-led campaign to clean up the gritty output expected to flow from our $750-million Lions Gate Wastewater Treatment Plant. Richter’s piece “Moving Mountains to Save a River” tells the story of the Seymour River rockslide and how it nearly destroyed the river as fish habitat.

Jeremy Shepherd is nominated for an Environmental Writing award for Classic Rock, a simile-laden look into the nitty gritty of the North Shore’s geology.

Richter is also up for the Feature Article Award (for a paper with a circulation of more than 25,000) for “Paddling Forward: Truth & Reconciliation on Campus at CapU.”

Richter’s third nomination for 2020 is in the Historical Writing category for his feature “Nikkei Secrets Unearthed on Seymour,” which followed an archeologist’s efforts to document a 100-year-old Japanese logging camp in the backcountry.

North Shore News photographers Cindy Goodman and Mike Wakefield are both nominated.

Goodman’s “Into the Mystic photo” of a young girl getting drenched during a Hot Summer Nights event in Ambleside Park is up for the Feature Photo award (over 25,000). And Wakefield’s “Higher learning” photo of an Argyle Secondary mountain biker is up for the Sports Photo Award (over 25,000).

Sports editor Andy Prest is nominated for the annual Ma Murray Community Service Award for his role in reviving the dormant North Shore Sports Hall of Fame.

Julie Hamilton and Amanda Stutt are sharing in their nomination for best special publication (over 25,000) for their Vancouver Living magazine.

In the best ad campaign category, Tannis Hendriks is nominated for her Canadian Tire “North Shore Moments” campaign and Kelly Pownall and Birgit Brunner are vying for gold in the same category for their “Wanting to Sleep Better?” series for Dr. Sharnell Muir.

Hendriks is also nominated for Best Ad Design (over 25,000) for her "Benvenuto a tutti, mangiamo!" ad for Gusto di Quattro.

And the News’ 50th Anniversary edition, which chronicled our first half-century, is nominated for the best special section (over 25,000.) The nomination is shared by Hendricks, Prest and Brunner.

The winners will be announced at a gala held at the River Rock Casino Resort on April 25.
