Drugs, bees and striking teachers promise to be hot topics of discussion this week as all three North Shore municipal councils and one school board meet over the next two days.
City of North Vancouver Coun. Craig Keating will ask his colleagues to think about repealing portions of the citys drug bylaws when city council convenes Monday night. The regulations allow the municipality to recover costs for cleaning up grow-ops and other illegal drug production facilities from property owners. Keating is asking that the city refund one man who was dinged almost $3,000 under the current provisions.
Councillors will also hear a presentation from Capilano University reaffirming its interest in opening a satellite campus in Lower Lonsdale which could be an important piece of the puzzle in the development of the former National Maritime Centre site and debate allowing increased commercial activity in industrial buildings.
In the District of North Vancouver, finance director Nicole Deveaux will present the financial plan, and councillors will mull over loosening restrictions on beekeeping long a demand of the communitys perhaps surprisingly organized beekeeping lobby.
Both the City and District of North Vancouver plan to open their proceedings with the presentation of heritage awards.
West Vancouverites can also get a look at their local budget tonight, as well as hear the year-end report from the West Vancouver Police Department.
Tuesday night will be a busy one for North Vancouvers school trustees, with the 2012 budget, surplus land strategy and Community Learning Program all up for discussion. The striking North Vancouver Teachers Association will also make a presentation.
