The North Vancouver School District is down a trustee after a resignation in February. Would-be politicians have until April 23 to submit their papers.

Nominations for school board trustee in the District of North Vancouver by-election open Tuesday April 13 for a 10-day period.

Would-be trustees have until April 23 to submit their nomination papers for the byelection, which will be held May 29.

Whoever is elected this time around will hold their position for only a year and a half before the next general civic election takes place in October of 2022.

The byelection is being held to replace trustee Devon Bruce, who resigned in February after two and a half years on the board.

Bruce, a first-term trustee elected under the Building Bridges banner in 2018, had been acclaimed as vice-chair of the board in December.

Board chair George Tsiakos said earlier Bruce had cited increased workload at his North Shore Connexions Society job as the reason he stepped down.

Bruce was one of four trustees representing voters in the District of North Vancouver on the school board. Three trustees represent voters in the City of North Vancouver.

Voting for a new trustee will take place at eight school sites on May 29. Advance polls will also be open on May 19 and 24.

The byelection will likely cost about $80,000, schools superintendent Mark Pearmain told trustees.

School board trustees are currently paid approximately $28,000 a year.
