A man who rode through North Vancouver with almost 40 kilograms of stolen copper pipe this week is behind bars thanks to B.C.'s helmet laws, according to police.

The 35-year-old Langley man was riding a bike near North Vancouver's SeaBus terminal at about 9 a.m. Wednesday when he was approached by an RCMP bike patrol, who had noticed he wasn't wearing a helmet.

As the officers were writing him up a ticket, they "observed a large amount of freshly cut copper pipe sticking out of his backpack and duffle bags," said Cpl. Richard De Jong, a spokesman for the North Vancouver detachment, in a release.

"(Since he had) no logical explanation for being in position of the large amount of copper, the male was arrested for possession of stolen property."

The man, who was on probation at the time, is due in court Sept. 27.
