Christie Sacré said she is “humbled” to have been re-elected onto the North Vancouver board of education – she will be joined by incumbents Megan Higgins and Cyndi Gerlach, as well as newcomers George Tsiakos, Kulvir Mann, Mary Tasi Baker and Devon Bruce.

“I’m still reeling a little because I was worried,” she said. After the board was “labelled as something,” she took the comments on recent media reports to heart, she said on election night.

“I am very humbled by the fact that I did as well as I did,” she said.

Sacré topped the polls in the City of North Vancouver, which elects three trustees to the joint school board, followed by Tasi Baker and Higgins. In the district of North Vancouver where four trustees are elected, Tsiakos got the most votes, followed by incumbent Gerlach, Mann and then Bruce.

Incumbent Susan Skinner, who was notably absent from school board meetings, received 1,807 votes coming in eighth out of 10 candidates in the city of North Vancouver.

Sacré said she is ready to work with the new team elected by the people, she said.

“I’m glad some of my peers are back in and some new energy,” she said.

Sacré said she thinks the incumbent trustees learned a lot over the past term and she doesn’t think there will be the same kind of conflict the previous board saw, especially since there’s a trustee code of ethics in place.

“We all learned a lot and I think we’ll move forward accordingly,” she said.

Sacré said in addition to having to negotiate a new contract with the BCTF in this upcoming term, the school board will most likely be facing a new funding formula. This is making some people feel “nervous,” she said.

“We’re not quite sure how it will change,” she said, but they’re hoping boards will see the changes before they’re put into law.

Outgoing North Vancouver trustee Jessica Stanley ran and topped the polls in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District.
