ON a three-day trip to Taiwan last week, West Vancouver MP John Weston met with Taiwanese leaders and promoted the West Vancouver school districts international education program.

During the May 18-20 trip, which the Taiwanese government paid for, Weston attended the inauguration of President Ma Jing-yeou and presented Ma with a painting by West Vancouver artist Michelle Lan.

Weston also met with Taiwanese education officials to promote a post-secondary education abroad in West Vancouver. The school districts international education program is one of the most successful in the province, earning the district $8 million in revenue in the 2010-2011 school year.

Weston made the trip in his role as chairman of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group. There are roughly 20 such groups made up of MPs and senators. Their role is to encourage friendly relations between Canada and other countries.
