The man who died in a mountain biking accident near West Vancouvers Cypress Bowl this week was an experienced rider in full gear, according to police.

The 43-year-old Vancouver man was on Coiler trail about a kilometre from the fourth switchback of Cypress Bowl Road Monday afternoon when he went off a jump and apparently lost control, said investigators. The man hit a tree, and the impact left him with very serious internal trauma, they said. Emergency crews rushed to the site, but he ultimately died of his injuries.

The victim, a longtime mountain biker, was wearing a full-face helmet, gloves, goggles and body armour at the time.

The mans friends initially had difficulty contacting 9-1-1 due to the poor cell coverage in the area, but its unlikely that delay was a factor, said Const. Tammy Khorram, a spokeswoman for the West Vancouver police.

It was pretty quick, she said. The investigator says . . . no amount of first aid would have been able to revive him.

Police are not releasing the mans name at the request of the family.
