Vancouver police have called on North Shore Rescue volunteers to help them track down a man they believe may have vanished on the Baden Powell Trail.

Brian Safari Mbaruk, 21, last spoke to family at about noon on Friday, according to investigators. An avid hiker, he gave indications that he might have been heading for a stretch of the Baden Powell near Lynn Creek or Deep Cove. Mbaruk hasn't been heard from since, and it's out of character for him to be out of contact for so long, according to police.

The VPD has reported the disappearance to North Shore Rescue, North Vancouver parks staff and the North Vancouver RCMP, but with little information to go on, it's not clear where to begin a search.

Investigators are now turning to the public for help.

Mbaruk is black, 21 years old, six feet three inches tall and 170 pounds with short curly black hair and a brown beard. Police say he may be wearing a grey "obey" baseball cap, a dark blue jacket, brown work boots and a large backpack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
