POLICE are warning the public to be on the alert after a man posing as a contract worker sexually assaulted a North Vancouver teen in her home.
The suspect knocked on the door of the residence in the 4000-block of Capilano Road around 12: 30 p.m. Thursday and told the girl, who was alone at the time, that he was there to do work at the request of her parents, according to investigators. Once she let him in, the man sexually assaulted her. Police say the suspect is not known to the victim or her family.
North Vancouver RCMP are using all the investigative tools at their disposal to lead them to a suspect, but few details are available yet, said Cpl. Richard De Jong.
"There is no indication if this was premeditated or if it was a crime of opportunity," he said. "All of this is being investigated."
A police sketch artist was working with the victim Friday afternoon to create a portrait.
"She's quite traumatized, as you can imagine," said De Jong. "When we put something out, we want it to be factual and accurate."
In the meantime, De Jong urged caution.
"We want to warn the public," he said. "The police are advising all North Vancouver citizens to be extra vigilant when allowing strangers onto their property or into their residence for whatever reason."
De Jong said he is not aware of any other similar incidents happening in recent years.
Anyone with information about the assault or the suspect is asked to call the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
