Weather records were broken again on the North Shore over the smoking hot Labour Day weekend.
Temperatures reached 33.6 degrees Celsius in West Vancouver on the holiday Monday, toppling a previous record for Sept. 4 of 30.9 degrees set in 2003. Sunday’s West Vancouver temperature of 28.9 also smashed the previous record of 28.6, also set in 2003.
Overnight lows between Monday and Tuesday also remained in the low to mid-20s, adding to the sweltering sensation. The heat capped a sizzling weekend. Saturday’s temperature in West Vancouver peaked at 29.8, with a low of 17.
Tuesday had been expected to be the hottest day yet, but smoke that moved in from wildfires overnight served to dampen the heat.
Metro Vancouver issued air quality advisories as the yellowy purple haze of fine particulates blanketed the Lower Mainland.
Doug Lundquist, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the ridge of late-summer high pressure should remain over the North Shore until Wednesday this week. By Thursday, daytime high temperatures are predicted to drop about 10 degrees, to seasonal norms of about 20 degrees Celsius. Rain showers could also begin Thursday and continue off and on over the weekend, he said.
