LifeLabs workers to continue rotating strikes

LABORATORIES that provide medical tests were closed to patients in three of six locations across the North Shore this week as the company that operates the labs was hit with rotating strike action.

LABORATORIES that provide medical tests were closed to patients in three of six locations across the North Shore this week as the company that operates the labs was hit with rotating strike action.

LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services were closed in Lynn Valley, Parkgate and Hollyburn locations Monday and Tuesday, while Lonsdale, Marine Drive and Dundarave branches remained open.

That was expected to reverse today and Thursday, with Lonsdale, Marine Drive and Dundarave branches closing.

"The volumes have definitely increased in the labs that have been open," said Mitchell Toker, spokesman for LifeLabs. He said wait times have been especially high in labs on the North Shore - up to an hour at times.

Members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union issued strike notice last week. The union represents more than 700 workers, including 42 employees on the North Shore. Wages are reported to be a key issue in reaching a deal. The last contract expired in December 2011.
