The North Vancouver School District intends to go back before District of North Vancouver council for a development permit allowing construction of the new $62-million Handsworth Secondary, after having its first application delayed by council in April.

Spokeswoman Deneka Michaud said the school district will likely be back before council May 27.

A permit is needed to start work on the project. As part of that, a variance is also needed to allow the school to go ahead with 42 fewer on-site parking stalls than would normally be required.

That change would allow for the potential development of a new six-lane track at the school, if the $2.5 million to $3 million in funding required to build it became available in the future.

Council delayed approving the school district’s permit last month, citing concerns about traffic flow and congestion expressed by nearby residents.

School district Supt. Mark Pearmain told trustees the school district hopes council will reconsider its permit in the coming weeks, following a meeting between the school district, municipal planners and local residents, which was held May 7.
