North Vancouvers Grouse Grind is open again for the season after a six-month hiatus.

Hikers were officially allowed on to the gruelling 800-metre-high hiking trail Saturday for the first time since November. Metro Vancouver, which manages the trail and oversees its upkeep, closes the route in the fall for safety reasons, and reopens it after the spring snowmelt.

For the third year in a row, Grouse Mountain Resorts is asking outdoor enthusiasts to put their grinding toward a good cause by signing up for Grind For Kids, a fundraising initiative for B.C. Childrens Hospital. The program encourages trail users to get friends and coworkers to pledge a dollar for every time they complete the hike over the summer and to submit the funds at the end of the season. An electronic timer-card system allows participants to track their progress on line.
