A 10-year-old West Vancouver girl may need reconstructive surgery after suffering numerous lacerations following a household accident Monday.
The girl was playing with her younger brother when she ran into a sliding balcony door. Shards of broken glass from the shattered door cut the girl’s face and legs.
Upon hearing screams, neighbours who had been lounging on a nearby pool deck called police to the apartment on the 900 block of Marine Drive.
The call went out to an officer who had just dealt with another police matter on the 1500 block of Marine Drive, according to West Vancouver Police Department spokesman Const. Jeff Palmer.
After determining the approximate location, the officer sprinted up staircases until he found the right floor. Paramedics and firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after and took over treatment of the girl.
The patient was rushed to hospital and may need a long time to recover from surgery on her leg, according to Palmer.
While he noted the dangers of rough play, Palmer said the incident was just a “terribly unfortunate accident.”
West Vancouver Police Victim Services are working with the family to recover from the psychological trauma of the accident, according to Palmer.
