TUESDAY evening was a dangerous time to be a cyclist or pedestrian in North Vancouver as four separate collisions with cars between 6 and 8 p.m. sent victims to hospital.
In the first and most serious incident, a 63-year-old mans leg was broken when he was hit by an eastbound pickup truck on West Keith Road at Jones Avenue around 6:15 p.m. Police have charged the driver with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
Just 45 minutes later, a man driving an SUV rear-ended a cyclist riding up East Keith Road at Calverhall Street, resulting in a minor head injury for the cyclist. The driver said the sun had been in his eyes at the time of the accident, according to police.
Fifteen minutes after that, a woman riding her bike on the sidewalk along Brooksbank Avenue crashed into a vehicle coming out of a nearby parking lot. The 51-year-old wound up with minor injuries to her hip and arm. Both individuals involved were ticketed for the incident the cyclist for riding on the sidewalk and the driver for failing to yield.
A third cyclist had to be treated for bumps and bruises after colliding with a vehicle on Mount Seymour Parkway as the driver was trying to turn onto Berkley Road around 7:40 p.m.
All four victims were taken to Lions Gate Hospital for treatment.
All victims are very fortunate their injuries were not more serious, said Cpl. Richard De Jong, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. The police remind cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles to be extra vigilant during these warm summer days and evenings, when more of us are out and about enjoying the pleasant weather.
