THE first motorized delivery van rolled down the streets of Vancouver in 1907.

From that first vehicle to the modern 18-wheel rigs that move their loads all over the province, the demand for the trucking industry continues to grow, to the point today where trucking is among British Columbia's five largest industries.

Author Daniel Francis chronicles the growth of this industry and the men who made it successful. Filled with archival photographs, historical illustrations and contemporary images, the book contains more than 280 pictures, almost all previously unpublished.

The extensive collection depicts all manner of trucking through the past century. The development of roads and bridges gets some attention as well through the stories of new routes and the construction that made it possible.
