Five people narrowly escaped serious injury from a home that was destroyed by a raging fire Monday morning in North Delta.
Delta Fire Department confirmed with the Optimist that 20 firefighters and six apparatus responded around 11 a.m. to a two-storey home in a quiet cul de sac on Sheaves Place.
Deputy Fire Chief Tim Ispen said when firefighters arrived they found the second floor of the house fully engulfed in flames.
He said the fire was tricky to gain access too due to debris outside the home, which forced firefighters to fight the blaze defensively from the outside and protect surrounding houses.
“Some of the occupants might have suffered a few minor burns,” said Ipsen. “Crews are still on scene putting out hotspots – it has been a pretty stubborn fire to full extinguish, so we will likely have to start manually pulling the structure apart. It [the fire] is knocked down, but it is not fully extinguished.”
Ipsen said firefighters will likely be on scene for most of the day.
He said the cause of the fire is under investigation and when it is safe to do so, likely later this week, a fire investigation team will be on site. The house is a total loss.
“City of Delta engineering were also on scene assisting with salt and sand in the area to help prevent water from freezing. When we have these winter conditions and these temperatures, it makes for added challenges, a lot of water run-off and freezing, so engineering was really good with the assist.”
